Choosing Wisely for headaches: Five recommendations against incorrect treatment
The "choosing wisely" recommendations of the Swiss Headache Society (SHS) were developed to improve the quality of headache treatment and avoid inappropriate care. They are aimed at doctors and patients.
In the Delphi study, members of the SHS's therapy commission compiled and evaluated such unnecessary or non-optimal measures. This resulted in five recommendations:
- (A) no repeat cerebral imaging if the headache phenotype remains unchanged;
- (B) no computed tomography of the skull for the diagnosis of non-acute headache;
- (C) no tooth extraction for the treatment of persistent idiopathic facial pain;
- (D) no migraine surgery; and
- (E) no removal of amalgam fillings for headache treatment
