42 new reference centres for rare diseases recognised
The National Coordination of Rare Diseases (kosek) has recognised 42 specialised treatment centres throughout Switzerland as reference centres, thereby strengthening the coordinated care of those affected.
In February 2026, the National Coordination of Rare Diseases (kosek) recognised a total of 42 specialised treatment centres in Switzerland as reference centres. The centres are part of seven national networks and are spread throughout Switzerland.
The reference centres cover important disease groups, including rare endocrine diseases, malformation syndromes and neurodevelopmental disorders, liver diseases, neurological diseases and epilepsies, multisystemic vascular diseases, coagulation diseases and skin diseases.
As central points of contact, the reference centres play a key role in the specialised care of patients with rare diseases. Due to the complexity of these clinical pictures, close interdisciplinary cooperation is crucial in addition to a high level of specialist expertise. Specialists from various medical disciplines work together in a coordinated manner to ensure the best possible treatment.
The centres are also integrated into a nationwide network and work closely with other hospitals, specialists and patient organisations. The aim is to guarantee high-quality care as close to home as possible.
The recognition procedure developed by kosek makes an important contribution to improving the care of people with rare diseases in Switzerland.
